Chapter 16

“Whoa, this is seriously good. And you made it in your crock pot? Really?” Sierra took another bite of the goulash that Roman had cooking all day in his trailer. She didn’t think she’d had anything like this before. He’d even toasted French bread in his toaster oven. It was amazing what one could make in a trailer with just a few gadgets.

He grinned. “Yes, it’s one of my favorite dishes. It always reminds me of my Grandma Holcombe. I was young when she died, but boy howdy could she cook.”

They all sat in silence for a few minutes as they devoured their bowls of food.

“I can’t believe how successful your booth has been this week,” Boone said between bites of his goulash and French bread.

Roman hadn’t expected their booth to sell out of slots like it did. They only had a couple of people so far not show up, and those who waited at their booth were happy to take any open slots, no matter how short they were. He wasn’t sure, but he thought he might even have made some new contacts for selling calves to.

There was one rancher who wanted to breed Scotty with some of their cattle, but Roman wasn’t sure about lending their favorite—and only—Highland bull. He had a few bull calves; maybe once they were old enough, he would offer stud services. Although, they weren’t full-blooded Highland bulls. They were crossbreeds. Once this fair was over, he and John needed to sit down and figure out exactly what they were going to do moving forward. Highland cows were really hot right now, but he didn’t know how long the market would last. And with the Millers next door breeding full-blooded Highlands, he might not be able to compete.

“I have a lot of ideas for expanding the business. But what we need is someone to come on who has crafting knowledge. We need to build up product for the gift shop part of our booth. It’s only a couple of months until the Christmas fair, and that’s always the biggest seller of crafts.” Roman tilted his head. “At least, that’s what my mom said. She suggested we check with the church to see if anyone wants to join us and help out.”

Annie widened her eyes and looked at Sierra.

“What? Do you know someone?” Roman asked when he noticed the silent exchange between the two.

“Actually, Annie and I both like to craft. There are times when we have an entire day with nothing to do, so we spent it making things.” Sierra shrugged.

“Really? What do you do with them? You have a tiny trailer; I can’t imagine you have much room for storage.” Boone shoved another forkful of goulash into his mouth and lowered his lids halfway in pure pleasure. “If you could do a goulash booth, you’d have lines out the door.”

With a chuckle, Roman shook his head. “Nah, if we were going to do a food booth or truck, it would be something to do with burgers and steaks.
